- Won second consecutive Indianapolis 500 in Marlboro Team Penske entry, becoming only the fifth driver to win consecutive times at Indy and the first to do so since Al Unser in 1970-71. First driver in Indianapolis 500 history to win race in each of his first two starts.
- Delivered record 12th Indianapolis 500 victory to team owner Roger Penske.
- Finished second in points in first full season of IndyCar Series competition, scoring wins at Indianapolis and Phoenix. Also won MBNA Pole Award at Phoenix.
- Finished fourth in points in his first year of True Value IROC competition.

2001
- Won Indianapolis 500 by 1.7373 seconds over Marlboro Team Penske teammate Gil de Ferran.
- Delivered record 11th Indianapolis 500 victory to team owner Roger Penske.
- Started 17th, finished 18th at Phoenix in only other IndyCar Series start.
- Finished career-best fourth in CART standings with Marlboro Team Penske, winning from the pole at both Long Beach and Detroit. Also won race at Mid-Ohio, pole at Motegi.

- Earned three victories, three poles and finished seventh in CART standings in first year with Marlboro Team Penske. Won at Detroit, Mid-Ohio and Laguna Seca.
- First career CART victory came at Detroit.
